Australian certified organic products rock: why it's essential we make our products locally and why in the world you need to care
Categories: Our ProductsApril 01, 2016 | Posted by Mukti
Mukti Organics is one of the very few Australian certified organic skin care brands out there, but why aren’t there more? In a word: cost.
It’s expensive to manufacture in Australia and it’s expensive to use certified organic ingredients. Most companies will trade one off for the other in order to improve their bottom line.
We talk a lot about why we care so much about our products being certified organic on our blog, but we haven't said much about our passion for Australian made products.
Ever since I began concocting my skincare products with my first baby strapped to my back – my gorgeous daughter Kiyana, now 21 and working for Mukti Organics – my vision was to make my products here in Australia.
Now, 16 years after launching Mukti Organics in 2000, many of my contemporaries have taken their businesses to Asian countries where manufacturing is a lot cheaper.
As for my business model, everything is done here. I formulate the products by hand in my custom-built factory in Maleny, in the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland. I have a wonderful team working with me at our headquarters to package the products, answer enquiries from customers and wholesalers, and source our lush, certified organic ingredients.
I like to be very hands-on with my products and manufacturing them here in Australia is the only way I can be totally confident that the quality remains impeccable and I am in control of what actually goes into the products and all the processes.
Why it’s important to buy Australian certified organic
More people every day are beginning to take a stand against the toxic chemicals being used in the manufacturing of cosmetics and skin care products, clothing, cleaning products, bedding, mattresses – you name it, there are health hazards lurking in just about everything money can buy.
Thankfully, the organics movement is well and truly here to stay. It’s better for us and better for the planet. But buying Australian made products is another area where you can take a stand and vote with your wallet.
We all want an economy that’s robust and sustainable, with plenty of employment for Australians. One of the keys to that is to support Australian businesses that are employing Australians, instead of taking the jobs offshore by paying for cheap overseas labour.
The other bonus is that Australian made products are manufactured to a very high standard, so you know what you are purchasing is good quality. Our manufacturers, farmers and processors make some of the best products in the world.
It’s also good to know the products you are purchasing use less of our planet’s valuable resources, because they haven’t travelled halfway around the world to reach you.
Research published by the Industry Capability Network shows that for every $1 million of new or retained manufacturing business in Australia, the following effects flow through the economy:
- $333,900 worth of tax revenue generated
- $985,000 worth of value-added generated
- $95,000 worth of welfare benefits saved
- 10 full-time jobs created
How to identify genuine Aussie products
The best way to find Australian goods is by looking for the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo –The green triangle with a golden kangaroo. The logo shows you that the product is made or grown here. It also often tells you if a company is Australian owned. So look for the logo when you shop. You'll not only be doing yourself a favour, but you’ll also be supporting our local workers and our environment.
