HAIR BREAKAGE: 4 FACTORS TO CONSIDER
Categories: BeautyAugust 08, 2014 | Posted by Mukti
Q: In the last six months I have noticed that my hair has become brittle and damaged and breaks more easily than before. The only thing that I have changed with my routine is the shampoo and conditioner that I have been using. When I spoke to my stylist she said that using a flat iron has contributed to this problem. I don’t think that I have had these problems prior to changing my brand of shampoo and conditioner. Is it possible that the products are causing this change in my hair condition?
A: It is quite common for people to blame their hair products for the condition of their hair changing. All shampoos and conditioning products are virtually the same with a few different ingredients thrown in and some razzle dazzle marketing hype. This is primarily why we only have one shampoo and conditioner for all hair types. The main difference in the formulations will be the amount or type of surfactant/foaming agent in the shampoo and the conditioning agents used in the conditioner, with a few added extras such as silicones to smooth the hair shaft to make it appear conditioned.
Hair breakage: 4 factors to consider
1. BLOW DRYING AND FLAT IRONS
Constantly blow drying and using a flat iron on your hair damages the hair irreparably and causes breakage. Try washing your hair less frequently and use heating products to style your hair for special occasions, as opposed to daily. There are some products on the market that can "protect” the hair from heat, but that does not necessarily mean that they can prevent your hair from breaking from heat abuse.
Chemically colouring your hair breaks down the protein of the hair shaft and makes it weaker. Regular chemical processing can push the hair to breaking point. Try opting for foils as opposed to a full tint and get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks.
I hate to say it, but as we age our hair becomes weaker, less dense and more fragile and prone to breakage especially around hormonal changes. My hair use to be lustrous and thick but in the past few years, I have noticed that it has slowly thinned out considerably and has around half the density it used to.
Nutritional deficiencies – the hair can actually be analysed to pinpoint mineral deficiencies that are prevalent due to modern day agricultural practices, environmental pollutants, chemical exposure, unbalanced diets and stress.Make sure you always use a conditioner on your hair after shampooing and use your fingers to comb through the hair or a widetoothed comb to detangle. The conditioner should provide adequate lubrication so that any pulling does not break the hair.
