Simple Night Time Skin Care Routine

By now, you're well aware of the benefits and necessity of a good night sleep for your overall health and wellbeing.

The effects of poor sleep in relation to your skin are numerous - ageing faster, lack of recovery from environmental stressors and less satisfaction with your overall skin quality.

A good night beauty sleep allows your skin to repair itself – increasing blood flow, rebuilding of collagen and relaxation of your facial muscles. Not sleeping well increases your cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Poor sleep can give you a sullen, dull complexion and puffy, tired Panda eyes. Stress can mess with your protective outer skin layer and cause inflammation and breakouts.

The end of the day is your time to relax and reset so I’ve created a quick and easy routine, that will get your skin glowing while you rest. Between 11pm and midnight is when cell mitosis (cell division) that repairs and renews the skin happens. This is the time when cells can benefit from nutrients and their age-defying benefits and your skin is more receptive to certain products. All the more reason to call it a night.

night time skin care ritual

Step 1 – Cleanse

Cleansing your skin at the end of the day is arguably more important than in the morning. A gentle cleanser will remover dirt, oil, makeup and impurities that adhere to your skin throughout the day. By removing impurities, you eradicate any chance of pore-clogging irritants that can damage your skin.

Each cleanser is pH balanced and formulated for specific skin concerns. If you wear makeup or sunscreen be sure to double cleanse as this will completely remove any lingering build-up. When applying your cleanser make sure you include your neck and décolletage.

Use this time to give yourself a facial massage and treat your skin with love and care. When removing your cleanser use warm water and a soft flannel. If you have acne, use a fresh flannel every time you cleanse. Remember – no harsh rubbing or tugging.

PRO TIP

For an extra cleansing benefit, use our Konjac Sponge to help gently exfoliate dead skin cells on your face. This will help to revitalize and promote healthy skin cell turnover.

Step 2 - facial mist

Over the year’s toners have had a bad rap, hence why we refer to this product as a facial mist. So, are they just part of some marketing jargon to make you add another step?

Toners of the distant past used to contain harsh, irritating and drying astringents that were mostly alcohol based. Our facial mists are based on plant hydrosols that balance your skin after cleansing as well as soften, pre-moisturise and assist with the penetration of additional ingredients.

A common misconception for oily-acne prone skin is that it doesn’t require moisture or hydration, because your skin is already oily.  Our Orange Blossom mist is slightly more astringent and helps to balance and tone inflamed skin. It works on soothing and clarifying without stripping or irritating the skin.

Our facial mists can be lightly misted over your face, pumped into clean hands and gently patted onto your face, or pumped onto a clean cotton pad and gently swept onto your skin. If applied to a cotton pad after cleansing, it helps to remove any further residual build up on the skin surface.

step 3 - apply elixir/serum

This step is about delivering deeply penetrating and active ingredients that target specific concerns. Serums and elixirs can be layered, just allow a few seconds for each layer to penetrate.

The Vital A Elixir is your perfect night time companion if you want to boost skin radiance and amplify age-defying results. Vitamin A helps promote cell turnover, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, increases elasticity, firmness and tones your skin. It’s best to use at night only as topical application of A can make your skin more sensitive to UV damage. Skip this one if you’re pregnant.

The Vital B Elixir is an essential addition for all skin types can be layered with the A Elixir. It’s designed to enhance clarity and luminosity and additional hydration. It contains Niacinamide (B3) a multi-tasking vitamin that has been shown to strengthen the skin. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) promotes deep hydration and plumps the dermis.

The Antioxidant Facial Serum is an ultra-light, silky serum that is a fantastic staple for skin that is more prone to sensitivity and dryness and doesn’t require actives but a healthy dose of essential fatty acids in a liposomal delivery system.

For a mega boost of age-defying vitamins, peptides and antioxidants use the Age Defiance Night Serum in conjunction with the Vital A Elixir. This reparative serum has been specifically created to make your beauty sleep count. It assists in brightening the skin tone, fading dark spots and promotes an even complexion. Key actives include specific pigment blockers and papain enzyme that breaks down dead skin cells and aids moisturisation. It also includes HPR a gentle form of Vitamin A. You’ll awaken to a replenished complexion with all the hard work being carried out while you get your beauty sleep.

PRO TIP

Any products containing A will assist with Acne and Ageing. Avoid A if pregnant and only use at night.

A side note about Vitamin C and Niacinamide

There’s a lot of confusion about these two superstar ingredients and you won’t usually find them paired in cosmetic formulations because most use a Vitamin C that has a low pH level (2-3), which is considered more acidic, such as L-ascorbic acid. Niacinamide has a more neutral pH of (6-7), which means the two aren’t normally compatible. I use Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) a much more expensive form of Vitamin C in our formulations, as it’s very stable and has the same pH range as Niacinamide meaning they can work synergistically and the benefits aren’t counteracted.

step 4 - eye serum/gel

The eye area is one of the first places that you’ll notice the visible signs of ageing - the skin is finer and more fragile and there's is less structure beneath the skin. Most of us need a little help in this area with specific ingredients to assist.
If you’re after hydration minus age-defying benefits, our soothing and calming Rosehip Eye Gel  to give you hydration and lock in moisture.

If you require a little more assistance – puffiness, dark circles, crepey skin and fine lines then the multi-tasking Age Defying Eye Serum is your go to. It contains specific peptides and vitamins with proven scientific results that instantly starts to work while you sleep. Use this product if some of your concerns include - decrease eye bags, dark circles and increase hydration around the eye area.

PRO TIP

Use your ring fingers when applying an eye product as there is less pressure. Gently press using a tapping motion and never rub. Apply under each eye, between your eyebrows, and either side of your eyes.

step 5 - hydrate & protect

Hydration is everything and the layering of products allows your moisturiser to reach its fullest potential. This step seals in the ingredients you’ve applied up to this point, plus adds nourishment and provides a protective layer.

A go to staple for all skin types and concerns is our Antioxidant Facial Oil. It contains a curated blend of superfood oils that sink deeply into the skin generating cellular renewal and assist with calming and balancing the skin. It’s rich in phytonutrients, phytoceramides and vitamins and works to reinforce the skin's natural lipid barrier.

The versatile properties of this oil also mean that it can be used with all other elixirs, serums and moisturisers for additional hydration, restorative nutrients and age-defying benefits. A few drops is all you need.

PROTIP

It’s best not to apply heavy duty creams at night as your skin is detoxifying and rebalancing. A few drops of oil should suffice for additional hydration and to lock in nutrients. Oil can be a multipurpose treatment, so you don’t have to stop at your face. Gently sweep it on your décolletage backs of, hands, hair and anywhere that needs a little moisturisation.
