When we incorporate foods into our diet that are nourishing and filled with vitamins and antioxidants, our whole body benefits including our largest organ – our skin.
So love the skin you are in by adding these top 10 to your summer meal plan.
Blueberries and other dark coloured berries contain high concentrations of antioxidants and can assist with red blotchy skin conditions.
2. Sweet potatoes
Rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps the body repair damaged skin cells. Try adding them to salads and substituting potatoes for sweet potatoes.
High in biotin that is required to create new skin, hair and nails. Biotin is an important B vitamin and a deficiency can result in rashes and irritated skin conditions.
4. Chia and flax seeds
Research dating back to as early as the 1920’s purports the benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s) to promote healthy skin. These EFA’s strengthen and repair the cell membrane and protect the skin from harmful toxins. You can soak them overnight and add to your superfood skin smoothie.
An excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidant and free radical scavenger that also assists in the production of collagen and elastin, the essential building blocks for skin. Papaya also has anti-inflammatory compounds that calm irritated skin and improve the complexion.
Contains healthy EFA’s and are high in vitamin E that helps protect the skin from fine lines and wrinkles. A diet rich in vitamin E also assists sun-damaged skin.
7. Green tea
Contains an abundance of skin rejuvenating polyphenols that protect the skin and ward off skin cancer.
We are 70 percent water, so the importance of staying hydrated on the inside and flushing out toxins cannot be excluded from the list!
9. Collard greens
Contain more antioxidants than kale and also have anti-inflammatory properties.
10. Brazil nuts
Contain high concentrations of selenium that works in conjunction with vitamin E to protect the skin from the harmful effects of free radicals.
