Vitamin C products for skin: do they really work?

Categories: Beauty, Our ProductsMay 29, 2015 | Posted by Mukti

Vitamin C skin boosters are huge right now. But if the vitamin C product you're using isn't producing the expected results, it could be that it contains an ineffective form of vitamin C that's doing very little for your skin.

So how do you know if you're using the right vitamin C product?

How well your anti-aging vitamin C skin product performs depends entirely on what type of vitamin C it contains and how it was extracted or manufactured.

First and foremost, it has to be natural and secondly, it has to be extracted and processed correctly.

Vitamin C is highly unstable, so we use concentrated native Australian Kakadu plum in sufficient ratios to the overall formulation as the source of our pure, highly potent vitamin C.

Furthermore, it is extracted using a scientifically advanced method that keeps its active compounds intact. In fact, it's the best there is.

Synthetic forms of vitamin C attempt to mimic the naturally occurring compounds that produce the anti-aging effects, but they don't come close to the real thing so frankly, I'd strike synthetic vitamin C off the list.

Naturally derived vitamin C is better, but many of the traditional extraction methods used to get the vitamin C out of the fruit actually render the healing compounds useless.

Pure, raw vitamin C is a highly unstable molecule. It’s a powerful water-soluble antioxidant and a superior free radical scavenger that helps prevent cell and tissue damage. But this unstable nature means it oxidises and dissipates rapidly.

Outdated extraction processes and methods for delivering vitamin C to skincare products, such as maceration, percolation, freeze-dried and whole fruit powders, degrade the phyto-compounds, so that little or no active compounds are actually left.

Translation: Just because your product says it contains vitamin C, it doesn't mean your skin is receiving any anti-aging or healing benefits whatsoever.

Why we use Native kakadu plum extract as our natural vitamin C source

Kakadu plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) is an Australian native plant found in the northern regions of Australia. Due to the constant exposure to harmful rays of the sun, it has developed an efficient system to protect itself from the oxidative stress caused by sun induced free radicals.

Native Extracts, our supplier of kakadu plum, uses an advanced ‘cellular extraction’ technology, which allows the vitamin C in the kakadu plum to be stabilised. It is a rapid process that avoids the degradation seen in other extraction methods.

This is a world breakthrough and we're excited to be one of the only skincare companies using this product.

It contains the world's highest concentration of nutrient-available vitamin C, a free radical scavenger that protects the skin from environmental harm.

Native Extracts kakadu plum contains 3700mg of vitamin C per 100 grams compared with 53mg for oranges, 1677mg for acerola and 2700mg for camu camu.

This bioavailable form of vitamin C restores the skin's antioxidant defence system protecting the skin from degradation and stimulates pro-collagen 1 and hyaluronic acid to help reduce wrinkles, improve skin texture and protect against UV related damage.

It is also contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties that dramatically increases the synthesis of collagen, lessens hyper pigmentation and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

We also like Native Extracts because they have a direct supply relationship with local indigenous communities who wild harvest over 20 tonnes annually. So we can be sure our kakadu plum extract is sustainablefair trade and certified organic.

Clinical studies show that when used twice a day, our kakadu plum extract gives:

We love Kakadu plum extract so much that it is a key ingredient in just about all our facial products including:

AGE DEFIANCE DAY SERUM, AGE DEFIANCE NIGHT SERUM, ANTIOXIDANT FACIAL OIL OMEGA 3-6-9, ANTIOXIDANT FACIAL SERUM, CLARITY BALM, ALOE VERA MOISTURISER, BALANCING MOISTURISER, HYDRATING MOISTURISER, TINTED MOISTURISER WITH SUNSCREEN FAIR & MEDIUM, HYDRATING CLEANSING LOTION, ROSE BLOSSOM HYDRATING MIST TONER, NEROLI BLOSSOM BALANCING MIST TONER & MARIGOLD HYDRATING CREME.

I am SO EXCITED to have found Mukti Organics. Currently, I have been making my own Vitamin C serum. I make it often in the hope that the Vit. C compound is stable enough to take effect, even though it is synthetic.
I'm keen to try these products and see the results myself. I also love that Aboriginal peoples are benefiting from the sale of these products.

Great post! I think it's also worth adding that, since Vitamin C is water soluble (you wee it out) it needs to be replaced internally and externally every day. I have also read that Vitamin C has incredible all-round health benefits including cancer-fighting abilities! Does anyone know if it's possible to buy kakadu plum read to eat and where you'd buy it? When is it in season?

Thanks Arla for your awesome feedback. I believe the easiest way to buy kakadu plum is in powder or liquid form. They mostly harvest kakadu plums in the Northern Territory, so if you're ever in that area go to a local kakadu plum harvester and see if you can buy a whole fruit ready to eat. Not sure what it would taste like though ... :D
