A Step-by-step Guide: How To Layer Your Skincare Products

Exploring the world of skincare can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re starting out. With so many products online opinions and advice, it’s easy to feel unsure about what to use first or how to combine products for best results. We often hear from clients and friends that layering can feel really confusing.

In this guide, we'll simplify the process and share how to build a layered routine that works with your skin. You’ll learn how to choose and apply products that harmonise, how to support your unique skin type, and how to create a ritual that honours the innate intelligence of your skin.

Nourish. Nurture. Protect

My approach to layering follows a simple, intuitive rhythm: Nourish – Nurture – Protect.

This three-step philosophy forms the basis of every effective skincare ritual:

  1. Nourish – Begin with hydration and nutrition. Start with cleansing, toning, and applying your water-based serums to feed the skin with essential actives.
  2. Nurture – Treat and repair. This is where you apply your targeted serums – vitamins, peptides, and antioxidant concentrates that restore balance and vitality.
  3. Protect – Seal and defend. Finish with your moisturiser and daily sun protection to lock in hydration and shield against oxidative stress.

The Art of Layering

A simple rule of thumb: apply products from thinnest to thickest. But beyond texture, it’s about format and function. Understanding the formulation type will help you know where each product belongs in your ritual.

1. Water-Based Formulations
These lightweight mists and serums are your hydrating foundation. Apply first, directly after cleansing, while the skin is still slightly damp to boost penetration.

2. Anhydrous Formulations
Water-free serums and concentrates often deliver potent actives such as vitamins or antioxidants. Apply these after water-based layers but before oils or creams.

3. Creams & Moisturisers
These products seal in previous layers (mists and serums), offering long-lasting nourishment and protection for the skin barrier.

4. Oils & Elixirs
Your final hydration layer. Nourishing facial oils help seal in hydration and deliver essential fatty acids. Apply a few drops and press gently into the skin to lock in moisture.

5. Suspensions & Emulsions
These combine both water and oil phases, or contain suspended particles for enhanced delivery. Serum emulsions follow water-based steps, while cream emulsions are applied last.

For most routines, three serums are plenty. If you’re layering multiple water-based products, start with the one that addresses your primary concern.

Layering is less about the number of products and more about understanding synergy how ingredients and textures interact to nurture your skin. When applied mindfully, each step builds upon the next, creating a ritual that supports long-term balance and radiance.
