Benefits of Microdermabrasion and Microneedling

Beauty

Microdermabrasion and microneedling are gaining popularity as easy to perform, beneficial beauty treatments that are suitable for most skin types. While they might not be as effective for more serious skin conditions, they're proving beneficial for minor and superficial skin issues.

So what's the difference? Microdermabrasion is a skin exfoliation treatment whereas micro or dermal needling stimulates new skin.

MICRODERMABRASION VS MICRONEEDLING VS DERMABRASION

Dermabrasion is used to treat scarring and UV damage. It’s a procedure performed under general anaesthetic by a qualified cosmetic doctor. It literally sands off the top layers of your skin and leaves an open wound. The downside of this treatment is that it can take up to two weeks’ recovery time. There’s also some risk involved like hypo pigmentation (whitening) and scarring. It’s not actually performed much these days, as lasers tend to outperform as far as precision and results. In saying this, lasers should only be in used in the hands of highly qualified and trained professionals, as they can also permanently damage your skin if used incorrectly.

Microdermabrasion, on the other, hand carries virtually no risk, is non-invasive and painless. It basically polishes and buffs your skin using a high-pressured stream of fine crystals. It’s effective in removing the top layers of dead skin cells and doesn’t affect the deeper dermal layers of the skin. It’s suitable for most skin types, and the only side effects can be a mild blush immediately following your treatment.

Despite its popularity as far as cosmetic procedures are concerned, don’t believe any false marketing hype and expect a miracle in relation to deeper scars and wrinkles. These are considered to be contour changes that require deep stimulation to initiate improvement and repair. What you can expect is an overall improvement in skin texture and radiance.

There's some evidence to suggest microdermabrasion can stimulate collagen production and assist with penetration and absorption of active ingredients like vitamins and peptides because of the removal or the outer skin barrier.

MICRODERMABRASION

Is a simple, cost effective salon treatment that requires minimal down time. It can improve the texture of your skin resulting in a rejuvenated and glowing complexion. Yay to that! For optimal results, it can be combined with an oxygen treatment and best of all, it is completely natural and non toxic.

To clarify, microdermabrasion and dermabrasion are two completely different treatments:

Microdermabrasion – is a mild and superficial mechanical treatment, the operative word being micro.
Dermabrasion – is a traditional skin resurfacing treatment that goes much deeper and is more invasive.

MICRONEEDLING/DERMAL ROLLING

Last year, we introduced our own dermal roller. It fast became one of our best selling products alongside our Vital C Elixir. It's a great tool for skin enhancement and a simple procedure that can be carried out in the comfort of your home or by a beauty therapist for more advanced skin regeneration and treatment of conditions like wrinkles, scarring and stretch marks. It’s much more affordable than other rejuvenating procedures like resurfacing lasers and deep chemical peeling. It’s also been found to be effective at promoting collagen

The procedure involves the use of either a pen or roller device made up of small microneedles that can be as small as 0.1mm and up to 3mm in diameter. It works by pricking the skin to create numerous micro-punctures or channels. It sounds painful but it creates minimal noticeable damage to the upper epidermal layer, but microscopic injury and minor bleeding to the deeper dermal layer. The magic happens below the surface, triggering a cascading, wound-healing repair response in the skin.

The benefits can be multifaceted, resulting in a proliferation of new cells, increased collagen and elastin production plus some degree of repair and new skin formation.

HOW TO USE A DERMAL ROLLER

For optimal results, it’s best to cleanse, then pretreat your skin with appropriate products like our Vitamin Boosters or Age Defiance Serums that contain bioactive concentrations of plant-based polyphenols, peptides, vitamins and antioxidants. These are specifically designed to boost skin regeneration and rejuvenation and if used in conjunction with the microdermal roller, the benefits can be amplified.

When performing a home treatment, it’s essential that you avoid using needles that are too fine and pushing down too hard on the skin, using unnecessary pressure. Rather, keep the pressure even. Make sure you cover all areas of your face by following a Union Jack pattern – vertically, horizontally and diagonally.

Gently roll up and down and across on each section of your face three to four times, using less pressure on areas where the skin is sensitive or finer, like under your eyes. Your skin may be slightly red afterwards, but this should settle quickly. Once you’ve finished rolling, the superficial holes close within about 15 minutes so a skin infection is highly unlikely. If you have any sort of dermal impairment, rosacea, raised scarring or other sensitivities, then this may not be the ideal treatment for you, so use cautiously.

Studies have shown significant improvement in the appearance of skin texture, scarring and wrinkles after microneedling, as the skin tends to fill out due to the increase in collagen and elastin thickness. Improvement is subtle and usually noticeable within a few weeks, with ongoing results. This makes a dermaroller an effective treatment for mature or tired skin and those looking for a non surgical way to rejuvenate skin.
