What is Retinal?

While retinol and retinal are both forms of vitamin A, there are a few key differences that set them apart.

When applied to the skin, retinol undergoes a two step conversion path, commonly known as the ‘vitamin A pathway’, first converting to retinal, and then to retinoic acid - the most bioactive form of Vitamin A, and the only form that our skin can absorb. As a precursor to retinoic acid, retinal only takes one step to convert into its bioactive form, making it faster acting, with increased stability and delivery into the skin, when compared to retinol.
